  1. My ESP Wacky Moment

    February 24, 2010 by Leanne

This morning I woke up at 3:00am and had trouble falling back to sleep.
    doughnuts

While I was tossing and turning one of the bizarre thoughts that entered my mind was hoping I would find some of my family recipes that I’ve lost over the years. Two in particular came to mind – my grandma’s “Fudgies” and my Aunt Theona’s doughnuts. I had the recipes for many years on note cards I kept in a small green plastic container – which is nowhere to be found. I was really thinking this morning about Aunt Theona’s doughnuts. I wondered how many people in this world have probably never experienced the pleasure of eating a homemade doughnut. Doughnuts are so readily available and pretty cheap, why would you go to the trouble of making them at home? Once you’ve tasted one, you’d understand. My aunt’s doughnuts were so darn delicious!
The whole point of this story is – I was up at 3am thinking about how people don’t eat homemade doughnuts and then the wackiest thing happened when I opened today’s paper.  Look at what was on the front page of today’s Orlando Sentinel:

You  have got to admit this is WEIRD!!

Maybe now I’ll find that recipe.  Really weird!

  2. Happy Thanksgiving Everyone

    November 26, 2009 by Leanne

There is so much to be thankful for this year.

    765e_turkey1

The beginning of the year definitely had a rocky start given the economy and all that surrounded it.  I am so thankful for my job with Disney and all my friends I’ve made from co-workers to new friends made online to friends made through projects I’ve worked on (Hello Moms Panelists!).  It truly has been an amazing year getting to know such wonderful people.

I’m thankful for my friends and family in my personal life. Although my family numbers are very low – in fact you can almost count them on one hand (mom, Uncle Jack, Aunt Betty and some cousins scattered around the country) they still mean the world to me. I wish I saw more of them in person. Thanksgiving and the Christmas holidays make me reminisce for the old days when we were kids and the celebrations were huge with 20 or more of us cramming into Grandma’s little 2-bedroom house for the holiday meals. The kids were segregated to the living room eating off card tables while the grown-ups sat at the dining room table. Do they even sell card tables any more?  Card tables and TV trays were staples in every house back then.

I’m thankful for my best friends (and boyfriend!) The last year and half with Mike has been so much fun. I miss my friend Mike in California and his family – who at one time adopted me into their family circle. I wish we had more hours in the day to talk and catch up like we used to do.  And I’m thankful for my long-time friend Randie who never forgets me on the holidays.  Our friendship is going on 25 years.

I’m thankful for all my friends from my past I’ve reconnected with through Facebook.  While I hardly ever see any of them in person it is rewarding to see what they’re all doing throughout the year and how their lives have changed over time. I enjoy reading their status updates and smile to see the fun their having with their families.  And if it wasn’t for Facebook I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to attend my high school band’s reunion gathering this summer. Oh yes, that made me cry! I loved band and the comradery it brought. Those were priceless and special friendships.

And of course I’m thankful for my dogs. They bring such joy to my life despite the 2:00 am bathroom calls.  When Mikita takes a nap with me and lays her head on my shoulder to sleep – it just warms my heart. And poor Jefferson, who’s aging so rapidly in his elderly years – he’s so darn cute with his constant tail wagging just for glancing his way.

I’m also thankful for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade.  What would Thanksgiving Day be without it?

  4. I’m Slowly Winning

    October 31, 2009 by Leanne

It’s been a very hard fought battle but I can finally say I’m slowly inching ahead. Or should I say I’m slowly losing inches?

    feet-scale-tapemeasure-md

My lifelong battle with my weight has been a war since high school. I am like most women – a yo-yo of weight gain and weight loss. It’s pretty much been consistently cyclical for me, too. I’ll be in fairly good shape for a year or two, then the pounds slowly pile back on – 5 pounds at a time.  Next thing you know, I’m 25 -30 pounds from my ideal weight.

And that’s where I’ve been almost all of 2009, up 20 pounds from where I should be. It took a visit to my doctor for my yearly exam to knock me into reality.  His words cut through me like a knife in a chocolate cake. (had to do a food joke.)  I sat in his office and he said “Leanne, you’re fat.” Oh. I teared up. He called it “tough love”.

I knew I had been gaining weight. None of my tailored clothes from my 2005 trip to Hong Kong even came close to fitting.  Shopping for pants had become a nightmare when I would see the size I was needing to buy. I would completely have to suck in my stomach to get my pants buttoned. There was no room in the legs for a pinch of material – every pair was skin tight.

I would avoid any glance of me in the mirror. I hated my fat self. And I think what was hardest to understand was how did it happen?  I don’t eat junk food. I don’t eat fast food. I avoid fried foods unless it’s a rare occasion. I hardly ever eat sweets – except Biscoff cookies when I’m on a plane. Yum.  Yes, I drink, but I don’t believe a glass or two of wine brought this on.

The great news: Today, after 4 weeks of serious dieting and bringing back exercise into my life on a consistent basis – I’ve lost 16 pounds.  I wish I’d lost this before the camping trip but at least I’m getting in shape for the cruise.

It hasn’t been easy by any stretch of the imagination.  For me it boils down to calorie counting and carb control.  I scaled back my daily calorie count to between 1,000 – 1,200 each day. Some days even less than that.  I also cut out breads, potatoes, rice and pasta.  The hardest part there was bread. I love bread!  But to lose the weight I had to give it up.  The good news I can go back to it in moderation when I reach my goal.

Exercise is also a top priority.  I walk no less than 2-miles at least 6-days a week.  On a good day I’ll even jog a bit.  And I got back in the groove of hitting the gym at least 3-days a week for weight training. I can already see a difference in my arms and waist.  My legs, not so much but they’re improving, too.

I’m in my 40′s and believe me folks – losing the pounds as you get older is definitely harder to do. Cutting back to 1,000 calories a day is pretty drastic but it’s what did it for me.  In the beginning days I did feel faint at times but it wore off. And I do crave pretzels and chips with hummus. I will indulge  in those foods again – no doubt whatsoever.  And I’ll have stuffing with gravy on Thanksgiving, too. But I’ll be cautious and do so in moderation.
I’ve got to look good for this 7-day cruise in December!

    Pictures to come soon.

  5. One day at band camp…

    October 13, 2009 by Leanne

So my band experience was truly nothing like the infamous “one day at band camp” scene from American Pie, but it was memorable in all the good ways.

It was 6th grade when I picked out the trumpet as my instrument.  But it wasn’t my first choice.  I remember my family loaded into the brown station wagon (complete with side paneling) and drove to the “Band Wagon” store in College Park to select my instrument.  We left with a saxophone.  And then came back a week later to get the trumpet.  I just couldn’t figure out the reed of the sax.

In junior high at my first day at summer band camp I was extremely nervous.  I didn’t want to embarrass myself in front of all those other students I didn’t know.  I remember the band leader, Mr. Taylor and the band room – with multiple levels with a door leading outside to the practice field.  Mr. Taylor wanted to know our playing abilities so he had us all play a few solo bars of Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline“.  I was in the 2nd row so I had lots of time to get mentally ready. I sat there and worked out the finger chart and just hoped it would come out right when I played.  Not to brag, but I was terrific! It earned me respect from Mr. Taylor and bolted my confidence.  I have always loved the song “Sweet Caroline” ever since.

I stayed playing the trumpet when I joined the band at Edgewater High School. There was a huge difference in talent from junior high to high school. Big difference. I went from the big man on campus to the little fish in the pond. But it was all the fellow band friends that made the experience so much more.  I had the best time in band – made wonderful friendships and shared so many good times from the parades, football games, concerts, competitions, and parties.  I was a band geek and loved it.

Fast forward a couple decades later andwe’re now middle aged people. How is that possible?  This past weekend was one of the first reunions for multiple classes of the Edgewater High School Band Alumni.  It was so amazing to reconnect with people I haven’t seen in 20+ years.  What was interesting – some people looked exactly the same as they did in school and others, well, I had to peek at their name tags to figure out who they were. EHS Band

One of the coolest things about the reunion brunch was that they had members of the current high school band come out and play for us in the hotel.  I think we all shed a tear when they played the Alma mater and I lost it on the fight song.  It was a flood of memories sparked by those songs.  Band days for me were such a fun and exciting part of my life. Being in band was such an experience.  Band taught us discipline and respect and time management.  Hours and hours of rehearsals paid off on the football field, in the concert halls and at the state competitions.

I was a band geek – and damn proud of it!

  6. Heart Walk

    September 12, 2009 by Leanne

In a few weeks I’ll be walking with my fellow Disney cast members for the Greater Orlando Start!  Heart Walk  to raise money to fight heart disease.

    heart walk

I have a special place in my heart (no pun intended) for this event as I honor my grandma, who passed away many years ago after suffering from heart disease for as long as I can remember.  She died my junior year of high school.

Grandma moved in with our family when I was in elementary school.  Her health had declined so much she couldn’t live on her own any longer.  By trade she was a seamstress who specialized in draperies, but she would often make many of my play clothes and would even make matching clothes for my Barbie dolls! One of her many other talents was cooking. She was a phenomenal cook who made the best dinners and desserts I can remember. These were true meat-n-potatoe dishes with homemade breads, pop overs, brownies, and cakes.  I am thankful to still have many of her recipes which unfortunately  rarely gets used these days. It was all simple food, but gosh was it delicious.

GrandmaHere’s one of the few  pictures I have of grandma and me.

If you would like to support me in the American Heart Walk, you can do so by donating through my Heart Walk webpage.  The walk is the first weekend in October. It’s only a 5k so I think I can handle that.   The American Heart Association raises funds to not only fight heart disease but stroke, too. My mother has already suffered three strokes in the past 9 years and miracously, she recovered from all of them with no long term effects.  I know that times are tough right now and there are many charities in need of money.  I am grateful for anything you can do.

  7. Cool Disney Shopping

    September 10, 2009 by Leanne

I needed to check out some of the newest merchandise in the Disney shops to find some gifts for later in the year.  So today I stopped in at the Emporium on Main Street at the Magic Kingdom. I have such fond memories of that store and it’s no surprise, I’ve been going there since 1971!

While browsing and meandering through the store, I found the absolutely most fun beach towel. It’s just so colorful yet simple and not in your face Mickey.  I like that sometimes.  It retails for $18.95.  I checked Disney Shopping online to see if it might be there, but it wasn’t. I guessing it’s only available on property.

    disneytowel_edited-1

With my pool I use beach towels all the time.  I think this one just might be a fine addition to my collection.

Also… I stopped at the cast discount store on my way home just to see what they had in stock. I go there maybe once a year just to check it out.  It’s a store where they sell out-dated merchandise or overstocked merchandise to the cast members at a discount price.  It’s not a big secret or hush-hush. Cast members can bring family or friends every once in awhile to shop there, too. Today I got the greatest deal ever on something I’ll probably never use  or need. But once you see it, you’ll understand why I had to have it.

       Disney NYE Hat

Isn’t that great! It’s a New Year’s Eve Mickey ears  hat from last year.  And the best part is – it was under $1.00 AND because it’s my birthday month I got an additional percentage off that price. So, I practically got it for free. How fun!

  8. Cat vs Dog

A friend sent me this video for my birthday, knowing I love animals and that I have a German Shepherd, too.  It’s hysterical!  And the dog looks just like my Mikita. Enjoy…

  9. My B’day Shopping Spree

    September 7, 2009 by Leanne

I have an unofficial tradition I impose on myself every birthday weekend.  It’s been more of a tradition in the past decade or so, but I honor it nonetheless and it involves self indulgence and total “me” time. I shop. I shop all day. I go to stores I may not visit for another year and just have a dang good time browsing, trying on clothes, shoes, looking at curtains, dreaming of what could be, and just absolutely having a blast – by myself.  This kind of shopping is not something I can do successfully with anyone else.  Guys will get frustrated with all the girly stores and frankly, I don’t want the peer pressure of someone else (male or female) making me feel guilty if I really want to buy something I absolutely don’t need.

So, today was that shopping day.  I hit DSW Shoes, Off Broadway Shoes, Stein Mart, Ikea, Petco, and Marshalls

The coolest thing I got and probably the most fiscally responsible (read cheapest) was this napkin holder. I know! A napkin holder! But just look at how cool it is. It’s from Ikea. The napkins (also from Ikea)  lay on top of a black plate and there’s a weighted arm that holds them in place. I love it!  (P.S. Hey, did you  notice the awesome photo in the background?)

    napkin

The biggest purchase of the day was my 4 new pairs of shoes.  Yes – 4 pairs! For you shoe-nistas I am so going to disappoint you. I buy frugally and purchase based on 1) comfort 2) usability 3) need  and lastly 4) fashion.   Don’t come here expecting to see me in Jimmy Choos – it ain’t gonna happen.

But I am excited about these pretty shoes:

    New Shoes

The photo doesn’t do them justice.  They’re really dark black suede pumps and look amazing on my feet.  I got some really fun shoes today between DSW and Off Broadway.

Back to cool stuff – I also got a pretty new duvet  from Ikea.  It’s really lovely in person.

One last note, nothing to do with shopping.  The other exciting thing that happened this weekend was Mikita jumping into the pool all by herself, no pushing by me or Mike.  Last year she learned to swim.. this year she’s learning to jump in alone.  Yea for Mikita!

  10. It Pays to Shop Around

    September 6, 2009 by Leanne

I wanted a dinette set for my breakfast nook in the kitchen.  I kinda knew what I wanted – a tall-boy set with comfortable chairs.  For weeks I had been scouring the circular ads in the paper hoping something would catch my eye and also give me an idea of what items like that are costing these days.

About two weeks ago I started the search in the stores.  And lo and behold, I found “exactly” what I wanted at badcock Furniture, the first store I went to.  The sales lady told me I was “in luck” because the 5-piece set was on sale for $659 marked down from $800.  Eeeek.. it was a little more than I had expected but it was so exactly what I wanted.  What to do?  Thankfully, the smart economical side of me took over and I walked out knowing I needed to check out more stores for other deals.  But – it was just what I was looking for!

Over the next few days I hit more stores like Pier 1, Rooms To Go, American Signature and even tried Bed Bath and Beyond.  None of them had anything close to the perfect set I saw at Badcock.  Ugh -  I so didn’t want to spend that much money.

On a whim, I stopped at one more store to see if there was anything else that would work.  I visited Kanes Furniture.  The salesman, Guido, led me around the store showing me all their dinette sets. They also had one that was really pretty but too big for the nook area. As we went upstairs to see the final sets he said, “I’ve only got one more to show you.” And wouldn’t you know – it was the identical set that was selling at Badcock.  Same manufacturer, same name. Only $160 cheaper for all 5 pieces!  How about that!! I found my perfect set at another store at a much better price.

    New Dinette_edited-1

Ok, it actually doesn’t “pay” but it definitely saved me some dollars to shop around.
