VoluntEars & Disney
Today Disney Parks announced an exciting new way to inspire volunteerism in 2010: Give a Day, Get a Disney Day. The program was kicked off with announcements in major cities across the country and Canada today including Chicago, Miami, Los Angeles, Toronto and Atlanta. The premise is simple: Give a day of volunteer service and in return, you’ll get a free ticket to a Disney theme park at Disneyland Resort or Walt Disney World Resort. There are more pictures and stories about the multiple city events on the brand new Disney Parks Blog at www.disneyparks.com/blog.

I was fortunate to be in Atlanta when the announcement was made today. Dozens of volunteers from around the city gathered at the Butler Street YMCA for a day’s work to clean up the facility. So many wonderful people got down and dirty planting, gardening, painting, building benches, cleaning, and helping any way they could. Disney entertainment teams kept the place jammin’ with music. Colorful Mickey Mouse balloon towers aligned the work areas. A fabulous acapella quartet from Voices of Atlanta rocked the house. And the weather, slightly chilly, but nonetheless spectacular. And of course, a Disney event wouldn’t be complete without a little character – and who better than Goofy and Pluto to lend a helping paw. Er, I mean hand.
Two members of the Walt Disney World Moms Panel also attended, Jennifer and Heather both of the Atlanta area. Heather had her entire family joining in the volunteer activities at the crack of dawn – weeding, painting and planting flowers. They were such an inspiration.

Hi Leanne:
Remember me from TBEX. Great new program! Just tweeted but did it manually because your plugin doesn’t enter or shorten the url – but everyone should know about this.

I am super excited about next years’ theme! How great! I truly believe that volunteering gives so much to others as well as yourself! I got my volunt”ears” at D23 Expo for helping with one of their projects. I can’t wait to find out more about how I can help next year, too!

Good blog update for those that weren’t following along as it happened! Thanks for sharing.
I’m excited to see the small print and/or details for this program when Disney releases them.
I run a nonprofit organization (local chapter of it) called Treat the Troops (http://www.treatthetroops.org), and my family and friend’s time volunteering is way over the top.
Would be nice if there was a way to get Treat the Troops recognized by the organization handling and organizing the volunteer efforts. I’ll have to look into it when more details are available.
Do you know, Leanne, if there is a contact name to point the CEO of TTT towards? Thanks, and I hope you guys had a great (and too tiring) time here in Georgia yesterday.

The 2010 theme is awesome and I was so proud to be a part of the events in Atlanta. Not only was it great to see you and Laura but it was also wonderful meeting new Disney peeps. Yes, you all do have the best jobs in the world!
Glad you made it back safely, and I’m looking forward to encouraging people to help others while getting something very special back in return!
