  1. Conquering the Challenge

    September 28, 2008 by Leanne

The Walt Disney World Moms Panel and their families took on the Expedition Everest Challenge (EEC) on Saturday night.

EEC is a brand new sports event at Disney’s Animal Kingdom featuring a 5k run, scavenger hunt, and obstacle course. It was held at nighttime with fireworks kicking off the race at 7:00pm. After a 3.1 mile run through the park and its outer skirts, racers then tackle an obstacle course, very similar to what you see in boot camps: Crawling over roped, angled fences; balancing across a 20-foot, 2-’inch beam; and crawling on all-fours under a netting.

Then – the Olympic moment comes of receiving your medal of accomplishment.

Pre-Race warm-ups. OK – we were warming up our voices, not our muscles.

Kim, Heather R and Darcie having some laughs.

We were in group (Wave) 11, until we realized we were really in Wave 10.

Bret lost his voice last night at MNSSHP and had to whisper everything.

Kara and her son – ready to take on the Challenge!

    Darcie and her adorable daughter.

It was a spectacular evening for a 5k race.

    Fireworks kicked off the race.

Part of the group heading towards the finish line.

Ah, but before you can finish you have to complete the obstacle course.

Obstacles included climbing, crawling, and balance acts.

Heather R gets her medal! (Yea!)

Kim, Bret, Laura, and Heather kick it up with their medals.

    What a fun time!

What a night it was! A reunion of the Walt Disney World Moms Panel at Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party at the Magic Kingdom. 11 of the 12 panelists were there. (We all missed Brigitta.)

The evening began at the Train Station, our home base for the night. First to arrive was Kim and her family soon followed by Beatrice, then Erin, Heather M, Bret, Heather R, Laura, Darcie, Michelle, Beth and Kara. There were hugs and kisses flying everywhere. It was so awesome to see everyone again and meet their families. This is such a special group of people who will forever have a bond with each other and they’ve made a lasting memory with me.

  3. Yankee? But I Live in the South!

    September 23, 2008 by Leanne

I’ve only been a huge Atlanta Braves fan for about 20-years now. Yet this past weekend I found myself sitting in Yankee Stadium rooting for the Yankees. What has become of me? I did it in the name of history – a chance to sit in the seats of historic Yankee Stadium in one of the final two games to ever be played there.
    I had a blast!
While the game itself was a sleeper, the crowd came alive in the bottom of the 9th when the Yanks pulled out a win with the bases loaded and a zero-to-zero score.
When leaving the stadium, with the crowd happy, the loud speakers where blaring out Frank Sinatra’s famous song of the city “New York”.

It was a gorgeous day for a ball game. Check out my cool and subtle Mickey shirt!

Our view of everything from our seats.

The next day we took the Staten Island Ferry.

I love New York and can’t wait to go back in a few weeks.

In the meantime, I’m getting ready to celebrate with the Walt Disney World Moms Panel this weekend. Wahoo!

  4. More from New York City

    September 20, 2008 by Leanne

I stayed up here a few extra days to attend a conference. But you know how conferences are -big rooms, lots of people, stage – pretty mundane and not photo worthy of the blog.

I did have some time to wander around on my lunch break and walked right by the Ed Sullivan Theater where the David Letterman show is taped. Next time I’m up here I’m definitely going to try to get tickets to see his show.

    Here’s the famous Hello Deli.

This is for my Uncle Jack. He never told me he had a steakhouse named after him in the Big Apple!

Rick and Duncan at the rooftop lounge at the Gramercy Park Hotel.
    That was a beautiful place.

Now – off to Yankee Stadium!!

  5. I'm Celebrating – What Will You Celebrate?

    September 18, 2008 by Leanne

Day 2 in New York City and what a day it has been. At a special luncheon in the elegant Edison Ballroom off Broadway, Disney Parks announced today their exciting plans for 2009 – which includes “Free on your birthday.” Yes – in 2009, you can get in free to a Disney theme park at Walt Disney World Resort or Disneyland Resort on your birthday. What a great birthday present that is! There’s much more information about this at http://www.disneyparks.com/

Mickey was in NY for the big announcement – and took time out for a quick photo with me.

Four fabulous members of the Walt Disney World Moms Panel also attended. (Laura, Erin (standing), Beth, and Michelle)

The lunch was topped off with personalized mini birthday cakes for everyone in the room.
    So much going on!

  6. Finally – the Weekend!

    September 13, 2008 by Leanne

Even though it was “birthday” week, it felt like one of the longest weeks in quite awhile. My actual birthday seems like it was already a year ago. There was just so much going on at work – it all added to the overwhelming feeling.

I had a wonderful birthday – thank you to everyone who made it special. Mike flew into town the weekend before and we had so much fun.

Last Saturday night, I suggested we head downtown and check out Church Street Station. There’s been many stories in the news lately of how Cheyenne Saloon reopened this summer so I thought it would be fun to go see it.
Back in the day (I’m trying to avoid sounding like an old-timer here) Church Street was “the” place to be. It was always jam-packed every weekend. They would shut down the road to traffic and the street was wall-to-wall people. Rosie O’Grady’s brought in the tourists, Phineas Fogg attracted the locals with nickel beer, Cheyenne Saloon was gorgeous and so popular, and Lilly Marlene’s was the “date” night restaurant of the city. That’s how I remember Church Street.
Last weekend – wow, what a different story. You could have rolled a bowling ball down the street and not hit a soul. There was a brand new, unoccupied, multi-story condominium building sitting right in the heart of Church Street. It was gorgeous, but empty.

(The 55 West condo project at Church Street Station)

A comedy club now occupies what was Phineas Fogg’s and Rosie O’Grady’s sits empty. Lilly Marlene’s is now a tapas restaurant. (Ceviche) We had a fine dinner there and it was doing an “okay” business. It was still a beautiful restaurant. The new owners kept all the gorgeous woodwork and art that made the original restaurant so special.

After dinner, we strolled down Church Street, past all the bars which I used to go to in my younger days and then we walked down Orange Ave. It was also like a ghost town – on a Saturday night at 9:30pm. I never would have believed it had I not seen it myself. We meandered back towards Cheyenne Saloon and went in for a quick drink.

    Me at Cheyenne Saloon

The good news is Bob Snow did a remarkable job in restoring the place. What a beautiful venue. The bad news – it was EMPTY. Just a handful of people inside milling around. I asked the bartender (who, by the way, could have used a lesson in Disney guest service) about live entertainment. He said there was none on the weekends, only on Tuesday nights. What? It was sad. Such a waste of everything. I hope for Orlando’s sake, that the economy turns around soon, the condos start getting some occupants, and the people start returning to Church Street.

Mike, me – on my birthday.

This weekend, I’ve got a lot of reading to do for work. Better get to it.

  7. Monday – TODAY!

    September 7, 2008 by Leanne

Today is September 8, 2008 – it’s going to be a somewhat big day.

    Let’s see why:

    1. The online search for the 2009 Walt Disney World Moms Panel begins TOMORROW!
    2. I will be live on a United Kingdom radio station tomorrow morning talking about the Moms Panel
    3. And it’s my birthday. (not a “major” one, although the number does keep getting bigger and bigger)

Yes – the search for the next Walt Disney World Moms Panel begins tomorrow. I can’t believe an entire YEAR has gone by already since last year’s search launched. Where has the time gone?

I’m very eager to see how this year’s search goes. Last year’s search brought in an amazing 10,000 applications within a very short amount of time. Who saw that coming? Will the response be the same this year? I can’t wait to find out.

If you are – or know someone who is – someone who prides themselves on how much you know about vacationing at Walt Disney World, then I encourage you to apply for the Moms Panel. Just go to www.disneyworldmoms.com/2009 and get your application in. The search starts tomorrow morning.

My birthday is also tomorrow. At this point, I don’t have any big celebration plans but that’s okay. I did all my “celebrating” this weekend. Mike flew into town and we had another fabulous weekend together. I’ll have to save the story of our Saturday night escapade to Downtown Orlando for another blog. Only because he took all the pictures and they’re still on his camera. As soon as he emails them to me, I’ll write the story.

In the meantime, while he was here, he continued his swimming lessons with Mikita. And she was such a good girl!! She remembered everything he taught her last time and finally swam the length of the pool all by herself. She actually did a couple of laps on her own. At one point, she stepped onto the steps of the pool to get out, then turned around and got back in for another lap. It was so much fun to watch her not be scared of the water.

Next lesson – teaching her to actually dive in herself.

He used the football as her enticement to get in the water.

It took awhile to teach her to use the steps to get out of the water. She kept wanting to just get out at the nearest place at first.

Mike swam beside her initially to give her confidence (and make sure nothing drastic happened!)

She had a blast! And don’t worry, Jefferson also had a great time. He swam for hours, too.
