  1. Picture Proof!

    June 28, 2008 by Leanne

Not that I received any emails or comments doubting my story last week about snakes, I now have pictures of proof.

I’ve been wanting to get rid of the branches growing by the front side of my house. I knew they needed to be trimmed back. The branches were touching the roof and blocking the window which is also a big security risk.

These are the branches that need trimming back.

This is the path to take to get back to the branches. Of course, knowing there are snakes in my yard, I felt a little secure in that I could clearly see the ground and make sure there were no snakes in my way. I also made a lot of noise with each step to scare them ahead of time, hoping they’d slither away. (Far away) I proceeded down the path stomping my feet and rustling the bushes. BUT – what I wasn’t expecting….

…was a snake to be ON TOP of the bushes! And this one was fearless!

I’ve always been told that snakes are more scared of us than we are of them. Not this guy. He stayed right there on top of the bush and poked his head up about 4 inches watching me the entire time.

I obviously ran screaming when I saw him which didn’t intimidate him at all. I went around to the other side and chopped a few branches down while he stayed at his perch on the bush and watched everything. I even had time to go in and get my camera before he started ducking his head down into the leaves. I wanted to kill it, but there was not way to do so in that position.

    I HATE SNAKES!

And – look at who was keeping a close eye on the whole situation from inside:

  2. It's Officially Summer

    June 21, 2008 by Leanne

According to the calendars, it’s officially summer. Trying convincing us Floridians that after we’ve had such a ridiculously hot May and June. Grotesquely hot! Think rivers of sweat running down your back after being outside for only a few minutes. And – we’ve got at least three more months of this grueling weather. Sigh.

Along with summer comes the snakes. I’ve had 3 encounters with the pesky reptiles at my house in the past two days. This morning I actually killed one. It was only a baby – maybe 7 inches long – but I killed it anyway. It was out in the front yard on the sidewalk right next to my newspaper. I was lucky Mikita didn’t try to grab it while it was alive. I threw the newspaper down on top of it and then stepped on the paper – smushing the snake to death. I love animals, but I will kill all snakes that get in my way. Snakes, spiders, roaches and rats – have no life span with me.

We’ve been experiencing some pretty intense thunderstorms the last few days. Today’s storm was particularly bad. Lightning was everywhere and hitting very nearby. Poor Jefferson – he’s at that age where the storms really frighten him. He was trying to hide in the bathroom, then paced around and jumped in my lap, then back down and into the laundry room. I felt so sorry for him. Ashley got that way, too, when she was older. Poor baby.

Mikita had her first official swimming lesson last weekend. While she’s been in the pool before – 4 times as a puppy she fell in and I pulled her out – she’s been very reluctant to jump in on her own just for fun. She watches and barks at Jefferson when he swims, but she won’t have a thing to do with it herself. Until now. My good friend Mike was here last weekend and spent some time trying to teach her how to swim and get out of the pool using the steps. I really can’t tell if she enjoyed it or not. She hasn’t shown any interest in doing it again this weekend. It will take some time.

She learned from Jefferson – the ball is the most important part about being in the pool. Grab the ball, then get out.

This is Jefferson – the moment after he dived into the pool to catch the ball.

This gorgeous sunset was taken at Epcot last weekend.

Mike and I at Epcot enjoying the heat.. I mean the park. It was his first time there in more than a decade. We rode Soarin‘ and watched Illuminations. Too much fun!

Until next time – beat the heat and wear your sunscreen!

  3. Wrapping Up New York City

    June 7, 2008 by Leanne

Hard to believe our event was one week ago in New York. We were part of the first ever World Science Festival held across numerous colleges and universities in Manhattan. Our event was held at the Kimmel Building at New York University – a fabulous location and venue.

The children who attended the event were awestruck afterwards when the met the Disney Imagineers up close one-on-one. It was very powerful to witness this interaction.

Here is our event team for NY. (Me, Joyce, Jay, Michelle, Marilyn)

Michelle and Joyce having a great time.

This was the man assigned to cleaning out the Port-o-Lets right outside our registration window. He was a character!

The bar has no meaning – just thought it was funky enough to take a photo of. It sure looks like some good times have been had there.
