  1. Mikita – Mikita – Mikita (ala Marsha, Marsha, Marsha!)

    January 21, 2008 by Leanne

I am the first to admit, I forgot how much WORK a puppy is! It’s been 15 years since Ashley joined the family and frankly, I just don’t recall it being so much effort. Maybe Ashley was just easier to manage than Mikita. Don’t get me wrong – Mikita’s not bad or horrendous, just a little creature that is extremely curious and wants to explore everything she possibly can and then put it in her mouth. I’m constantly taking shoes, magazines, pieces of bark from the mulch, remote controls, toilet paper, and on-and-on out of her mouth. It’s been even more chaotic the past few days – as she’s learned the abilities of her hind legs – making her even taller and more accessible to things she shouldn’t have.

She’s growing like a weed. She’s weighing in at 20 pounds now – up from 8 lbs when I brought her home 4 weeks ago. I haven’t been measuring her height but I can tell you for sure, she is much taller!

The drama with Jefferson seems to be subsiding. They’re wrestling and playing together now when 10 days ago there were more snarls and growls than a cat in a dog kennel. I’m so happy about this. I was very worried about what my next steps would be, but I don’t seem to need to focus on that any more. (yea!)

    ‘Ears to you!

Sitting pretty for my photo op.

Still the handsome devil – at 12 years old. Mikita idolizes him.

  2. First Week – Check!

    January 6, 2008 by Leanne

The first week of the new year has concluded – with no anomalies. Trying to get back into the swing of things at work was a little awkward. It was hard to have to put in a full day at the office after so many days either off on vacation, holiday, or just working shortened hours. This coming week is going to be even more difficult – having to do so for a full week. How will we do it?

The minor rehab work on my house continues on. I am so fortunate to have found a reliable home services man – who I can trust. And he lives right next door.. and he’s cute, too! Bonus!
Anyway, my house exterior has been totally repainted and looks fabulous. My ceiling repair/redesign is nearly done. And the new paint on the pool deck is awesome. It looked pristine until the dirty paw prints created a new, unwanted design. My next move is looking for comfortable patio furniture to make the transition complete. Then – party time at my house!

As I’m sitting here typing this – I’m listening/watching the Sunday Morning Show on CBS and they’re profiling the Consumer Electronics Show taking place in Vegas this week. They just showed off a new handheld library device – that can hold more than 400 books in the palm of you hand. It’s about the size of a blackberry. Sorry folks, maybe I’m just old and old-fashioned, but I cannot imagine enjoying reading a book on a small device for hours & hours at a time. There’s nothing like turning pages, sitting back and looking at the volume you’ve read so far and the imaginary places you’ve just been. A handheld device may be ingenious, but it’s not my cup of tea. Give me an old-fashioned paperback or hard-back – along with a hot cup of green tea – and I’m all set.

And finally, what’s a blog update without a mention of Mikita and Jefferson?

This was taken New Year’s Eve at our first vet appointment. She’s doubled her weight since her last visit and she’s growing taller every day. She’s going to be as big as Jefferson within weeks.

They’re getting along fine. One minute he’s snarling and snapping at her putting her in her place, the next minute they are rolling around on the floor together or playing tug-o-war together. She idolizes him!
Got to run – need to go grocery shopping for mom. She’s still the same. We have another doctor’s appointment tomorrow to figure out what to do next about her hip fracture, which hasn’t improved at all.
    Happy 2nd Week of January!

  3. Good Bye 2007

    January 1, 2008 by Leanne

Who knew last year at this time – what 2007 was going to hold.
I kinda knew it would likely be the last year for my baby Ashley. She was getting up there in age and I knew it wouldn’t be much longer. She gave me 14 wonderful years which I will treasure forever.

Ashley was a good girl – a great dog.

Who also knew that 2007 would be the year I lost the two men closest to my father-figure since my dad passed away in 1990. What made this ever more bizarre was how the two men died.
Pete Farrington, my uncle, and Bob Hyland, my good friend’s father – both died on the same day at the exact same time – and both from cancer.
Both men were there for me whenever I needed them.
Both men were awesome individuals who cared greatly about their families and constantly gave of themselves to others.
Both men had incredible personalities with a great sense of humor.
Both men will be missed more than anyone will ever know.

Staying on the topic of men in my life, I stopped by my dad’s and my brother’s grave sites this month. It has been a very long time since I last visited there. I think because I cry every time I go, it makes me not want to visit very often because I don’t want to be so upset.

It’s been a frustrating year for my mom – and me – with her failing health. How she’s managed through everything is amazing. In the past 4 years, she’s had 3 strokes, high blood pressure, abdominal aneurysm, pancreatitis, middle ear infection, and a fractured hip. She’s like the Energizer bunny – “just keeps on tickin’”. Her ear infection continues to bother her and cause random dizzy spells and her hip hasn’t improved in 12 weeks. She still can’t walk more than 10 feet without pain and becoming breathless.
2007 was good to me with traveling. I spent nearly a month in Paris, a week in Spain, visited Chicago for the first time and made several trips to LA, including to Temecula wine country. The worst of the traveling this year was the trip to the Super Bowl in Miami. That’s not really fair, the trip was fine, for goodness sakes, its only a four hour drive away from here. It was the actual game-day that sucked so bad. It was so cold and pouring rain and there we were standing outside in the middle of it all for 4-hours. It’s amazing we didn’t all catch pneumonia.

The worst Super Bowl ever. (but a great team doing it!)

I’m in love wiht Paris, France! I’d go back there in a heartbeat!

Temecula – wine country in Southern L.A. Lots of fun!

2007 was the year I made the decision to cut my hair – really short. I liked it for about a week, then couldn’t wait for it to grow out long again. When it is short, with the Florida humidity, it can kink up so frizzy that I look like little orphan Annie.

    2007 brought me Mikita.

And gave me a great year with Jefferson

2007 also reunited me with many old friends – some I hadn’t seen in many years.

So with 2 hours and 45 minutes left in this year, I wish you all a Happy New Year and may 2008 see all your dreams come true.
