  1. Barcelona Baby!

    May 25, 2007 by Leanne

Yesterday we made the journey from Madrid to Barcelona on Spanair Airlines. The flight was full! After a little turbulence along the way, we landed just fine and started our new adventure in Barcelona.
This was our longest day of the trip so far. We had to start so early because of the flight to transfer cities, and then we had a full day of touring and ended with taking part in the welcome event for the Disney Magic at the Port of Barcelona for the Disney Cruise Line Mediterranean cruises. What a day!

When we arrived in Barcelona, one of the many things I noticed right away were the huge billboards aligning the city streets!

Our first tour stop was the famous La Sagrada de Familia.
This incredible work by architect Antoni Gaudi has been in the works for more than 120 years.
There are now eight towers completed out of a total of 18 in the original plans.
    Its truly a breathtaking structure.

Our Japan Ambassador, Mirika, takes her own photos of the Sagrada Familia.

    Adonis and me at lunch.

Our lunch table at the tapas lunch.

After lunch we toured a famous park created by Gaudi.

Mike and Arnaud listen intently to the tour guide, Eva.

A view of Barcelona from the park.

The colorful and curved park benches – both a common trait of Gaudi’s work.

Finally, in the late evening, I met up with my good friend Miguel at the Port of Barcelona.

We boarded a small tour boat to head out to sea to view the port fireworks -honoring the arrival of the Disney Magic. To say the waters were rough, would be under stating it. It was rough!

More of Barcelona and Adventures by Disney when I come back – in the next few days.

  2. The Castle Life

    May 23, 2007 by Leanne

On Day Three – we visited The Castillo Alcazar in Segovia, about an hour’s drive outside of Madrid. The 12th Century palace is where Queen Isabella married King Ferdinand and gave Christopher Columbus permission to discover the new world. (Despite what I might have mistakenly mentioned yesterday.)
The Castle Alcazar is also said to have been the inspiration for the beautiful Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland Resort, Anaheim. How interesting!
Despite the chilly temperatures and the constant rain we had a great time. There is so much history here it’s hard not to be amazed. Imagine walking the halls and steps where Kings and Queens did the same, hundreds and hundreds of years ago. Fascinating.

The Alcazar in Segovia. (Alcazar is Arabic for royal residence, or castle)

Our tour group photo. (I’m in the back on the left.)

    More castle shots…

This was the view from the Queen’s room. The building down to the left is the church of Segovia.

The armory had about six different cannons.

    The Thrones!

Stained glass window of King Ferdinand.

This is one of the moats. Its said they kept bears in the moats who would eat the victims thrown into it by the King and Queen.

Beauty shot of the river outside the castle.

    The grotto.

The view of Segovia from a Castle window.

Finally, the Ambassadors had their own personal group shot. Look how happy they all are!

Much more of Segovia coming later. Wait till you see the 2000 year old Aquaduct.

  3. Sol de Espana

Buenevido from Spain! Home of the bullfighters and flamenco dancers. Neither of which I have seen yet.

Just arrived here today in Madrid. We haven’t had a lot of time yet to see many of the sights. Our big touring adventures begin tomorrow morning.

This afternoon we had a few free hours on our own to wander around near the hotel – which is located in downtown Madrid, in the heart of everything. This evening though, we went out as a group to a wonderful dinner at a restaurant that normally doesn’t serve large groups like ours. (16pp)

This isn’t Spain – it’s Orlando – right after take-off on Sunday afternoon.

This is the streetside cafe where I had my first meal in Madrid.

Lowell and Jasmine – photo moment.

    Streetside fun band.

This guy yelled something at me as I took this photo. Don’t have a clue what he said.

Dinner at the awesome cellar restaurant.

    With and without a flash.

Underneath the table was the preserved original cellar with lots of vases – large and small.

Our end of the dinner table.

  4. Life Goes On

    May 12, 2007 by Leanne

I know it has been nearly a month since my last post -but what do you say after the death of a family member?

It’s been a tough month. Thank you so much to everyone who sent cards, notes and emails. It was amazing to look back and see how many people knew her and remembered her through the years. She was such a great dog and a wonderful companion. Like my mom said – there will never be another Ashley.

Today I had the morbid task of going to the vet’s office to pick up her remains. They hand you a white bag branded with the cremation home logo and inside is a 5″ tall square canister. Also included is a “death certificate” and flower seeds to plant in her honor. Too much to think about.
I don’t know what I’m going to do with the ashes. I really don’t know.

Everyone is asking how Jefferson is holding up. He and Ashley always got along fine but they were never “best friends”. The only signs he has shown of missing her is when I leave for work – he seems to be really sad – like he knows he’s going to be completely alone for awhile. Otherwise, he’s the same old dog. Happy go lucky.
