  1. Paris – Still more~

    April 10, 2007 by Leanne

I’m back home – been here for a few days now. I took so many photos during my last three days in Paris that I’ll keep posting them here for awhile. Or at least until something big or exciting happens here.

Here are a few observations about Paris:
    1. Smoking – Good gawd, everyone there smokes! Not only does everyone smoke, but there are currently no laws or ordinances banning smoking from public places. I walked into one bistro (brasserie) and nearly gagged to death within the first 30 seconds. I looked around and noticed every single person inside had a cigarette in their mouth. Ugh – and disgusting.
    2. Bread, Cheese, Wine and Chocolate – I haven’t had such wonderful, tasty bread as I had in Paris. And the butter that went with the bread was equally as fabulous. I think I ate more carbs in the first week there than I had eaten in the entire past year. I am currently experiencing bread withdrawal symptoms. Croissants for breakfast, baguette sandwiches for lunch and french bread with dinner. YUMMM!
    3. Expensive – It’s definitely not cheap there. It wasn’t outrageously expensive, but there were not the bargains there like we found in Hong Kong. Restaurant food was priced about the same as it is here. Wine is definitely less expensive there. We went to a Wal-Mart type store where there were aisles of wine for sale, most in the $3 – 5 range. You don’t‘ find wine that cheap here.
Clothes were not a bargain anywhere we went.
    4. Getting Around – You can walk anywhere in Paris. It’s a fabulous walking city. If that’s not your style, there are plenty of taxis to take you places or there’s the city train, which we found pretty dirty. It’s on time and gets you there, but you want to use a hand sanitizer after the trip.
    5. Dogs – already talked about them in the last post. Dogs were everywhere, but I don’t recall ever seeing a cat, except in artwork.
    6. Fashion – I’ve read for years that Paris is the fashion capitol of the world. Hhmmm.. Not from what I saw. With the exception of a few trendy dressed young women, I didn’t see anyone stand out from the crowd as a fashion diva. Low-heeled, knee-high boots were the hottest accessory. A very close second place was the hobo-style bag. The bigger the bag the better. Hair accessories were also hot.

Enough rambling – I know you want to see the pictures.

This was from the Disneyland press event. Debby, Fred and me.

On our last night together as a group we went to a Moroccan restaurant.

Shep and I turned it on for the camera.

Me trying to get artsy with my photography.

Me and Annette joining in the dance.

Back to downtown Paris – this was a very cool chocolate shop window. It’s a little hard to see with the street reflection, but I think you can see most of it.

    Paris’s version of McDonald’s.

Marilyn and I found this little boutique and had a blast shopping here. We found artsy t-shirts, fun jewelry, French rocks, linens, everything fun!

This is the courtyard of a quaint hotel we came across during our walking excursion.

    Ah – Roden’s “the Thinker”.

Another tourist having his picture taken with the Thinker.

Me showing off my new jacket and my new jewelry.
Next time – photos from my bus trip to the chateaus of France in the Loire Valley.

  2. Parisians LOVE their Dogs

    April 6, 2007 by Leanne

One look around the streets of Paris and you immediately know how much they love their dogs. Dogs of all shapes and sizes and breeds were spotted being lovingly walked by their owners. Even more interesting is that most of the restaurants allow dogs inside! On our first visit into the city our group stopped to have lunch an upscale restaurant – and standing right in front of us in line was an older gentleman with his big black dog. It was very cool. Of course, it made me home-sick for my babies.

This was the dog in line with us at the posh LaDuree restaurant on Champs Elysees.

And finally, the cutest dog in all of Paris: Mojito!

  3. Paris – Notre Dame

    April 4, 2007 by Leanne

My 72- hours of sightseeing in Paris has begun. Well, actually it started on Tuesday, but who’s counting. One of the big places on my list to see before I left was Notre Dame. I was able to see this spectacular cathedral on Tuesday morning. It really is breathtaking. It took 150 years to complete the structure (1163 – 1345.) At one point, this cathedral was abandoned, until the works of Victor Hugo – Hunchback of Notre Dame saved it from ruin. It has since been restored and is now a major tourist attraction and working church in Paris. More than 12-million people visit this church every year.

This stained-glass window was just breathtaking. Most of the windows are not originals, as they were blown out during the World War and were replaced. Still – amazing to see.

An artist sketches during the day.

Tomorrow – why Paris has gone to the dogs.

  4. Bon Anniversare Disneyland Paris

    April 3, 2007 by Leanne

Happy Birthday Disneyland Paris! 15 years ago, the gates opened to the European public for the very first time. This week – they celebrated this milestone at the Paris park.

Craig, me, Miguel – just before the big ceremony started. It was very cold and rainy. When was the last time all three of us were wearing scarves? (and tied the in the French knot?)

    The new AlphabetUR entertainment event.

The god-mother of the park was Andie MacDowell.

    More ceremony photos.

The media platform – where raincoats and umbrellas ruled.

    The ceremony.

Ken P – “Go ahead – take my picture. See if I care.”

Me and Nancy at the end of the night. (Still very cold!)

There was a long red-carpet for the celebrities to arrive at the party. I knew none of them.

    Look! It’s Phil Collins!

And finally, the shaky, hand-held camera shot of fireworks.

    Much more Paris to come!
