  1. Faces in the crowd

    June 29, 2005 by Leanne

Hong Kong is a city of many flavors. There are all kinds and types of people here. It’s impossible to show you everyone, but here are some photos taken while traveling the city this past month.

More to come – keep watching!

  2. A Park in Hong Kong

    June 26, 2005 by Leanne

I had the opportunity on Saturday to visit another family park in Hong Kong called Ocean Park. Marilyn and I tromped through puddles of water and downpours to get there, but we made it! Here are some photos of the park – they’re all pretty self explanatory. The distant mountain shots are views from the top of the Ocean Park mountain. There are three very long escalators to take guests up to the top. They divide the theme park into upper and lower areas. The thrill rides and roller coasters are all located at the top of the mountain – giving quite a view.

  3. People – People Who Need People.. Are the Luckiest…

    June 25, 2005 by Leanne

Ok – you know the words to the song. Today’s post is all about (duh) “People”. Here’s a hodgepodge collection of photos from the events of the past few days and the people who help me and each other through all the adventures.

Derek, Joyce and Rick at Joyce’s b-day dinner.

Arneau, me and David at the same dinner.

Derek – from his arrival night – he looked so bright and cheery
even after a 21 hour flight!

    David & Mandy at dinner.

Esther translating at a press conference.

    Greg – non-stop Blackberrying.

Jacquee on her arrival night in HK.

    Joyce’s birthday dessert!

    Marilyn and me.

Mike contemplating life in his new glasses.

    Rick and Jacquee enjoying dinner.

    Our dearest friends of all!

  4. Happy Wednesday

    June 21, 2005 by Leanne

It’s Wednesday – which means more arrivals today from the states. Today also marks my third week here. When compared to the newbies arriving, I feel like a long-time local.

Marilyn is here for a week’s visit – It was great to see her!
This is a long-distance shot of the special Disney MTR (subway) train that will take guests directly to Hong Kong Disneyland.

We found this Disney MTR billboard while walking to catch an MTR to downtown.

I took this photo while waiting for the bus after dinner with Marilyn.

  5. Saturday in the Mall

    June 19, 2005 by Leanne

It’s been a “do-nothing” weekend so far. They came to spray my apartment for bugs, so I had to evacuate and became a refuge at Mike’s place for many hours. Our plans to go to Victoria Peak and also go see the Great Buddha were scrubbed because of – you guessed it – RAIN. So we took the city bus into downtown and walked around the area known as “Central”.
A tropical steel drum trio entertains the mall crowds.
This was the view from the mall window taken while I was waiting
on Mike to buy his Starbucks coffee.

These are the stone steps up the hill to reach the very American bar district
    known as Lan Kwai Fong.

I’m sure once the Versace P.R. people see this photo,

I’ll be their new spokesperson for sunglasses.

I took this photo just because I loved the name of the building.

  6. In no particular order….

    June 16, 2005 by Leanne

I started taking pictures because I knew I didn’t have very much new to share on the blog. The biggest event this week was the arrival of Rick from Orlando. Mike’s camera has the actual “bus arrival” shot. Rick arrived in Hong Kong during an Amber Rain alert – our first alert since we’ve arrived. Amber is the weakest – up to Black, the strongest. Black means you “hunker down” and don’t report to work or leave your building. Amber is like a severe thunderstorm which lasts several hours. It wasn’t that bad – especially if you’re from Florida and have our experience with storms.

The other event of the week has been my bug bites. If you’re squimish at all – don’t look – although I don’t think the photos are that bad. I’ve got a bad case of sand-flea bites. The scary part is it might be possible my apartment is infested. That is still to be determined.

The other photos are of the rain we constantly have. It rains all the time. If there’s more than 1 hour of sunshine a day, it’s a miracle. Rain rain rain rain rain rain rain rain rain rain…..

Rick arrived safely from Florida and couldn’t wait to start working!

Fog and rain.. rain and fog…

This is my apartment building – on the far left. Tower 6.

Some shots from the shuttle bus on our way home from Disney.

    g

the bug bites – ouch and itch!!!

  7. Food Shops

    June 14, 2005 by Leanne

Here’s a little taste of our local shopping experience.

These photos are taken at the little plaza that’s within walking distance from our apartments. It’s called the Gold Coast Shopping Plaza. There is a 7-11, Circle K, 3 sit-down restaurants, a very small pharmacy store, a 2-story (yet small) grocery store, and a McDonalds. On the weekends they hold an arts and craft festival which has some really fun booths.
I’ll take pictures of it this weekend to share with you soon.

A shot of the inside of our grocery store.

The ad showing this week’s specials.

The front entrance of the store.

And this is one of many Hong Kong Disneyland billboard ads

found in the MTR area. (Subway)

  8. 11 days in….

    June 12, 2005 by Leanne

I’m 11 days into my 120 day adventure. It’s going great. Thank goodness I have a network of friends and colleagues to rely on to help me find my way (and I mean that literally!)

A group of us hit Downtown Hong Kong on Friday night.

    A

    Jim and Sara at dinner.

Mike was the only person to order dessert – a hot, fudge brownie sundae!

Al and Holly enjoying dinner that night.
On Saturday, I ventured all alone into the city -and came upon this awesome fresh market with lots of fresh fish to choose from.

But those of you who know me well enough – know I didn’t opt for fish, but for some brownies! Mike has one of the very few apartments with an oven – and we used it to make some comfort food.

And finally – this is really a funny photo. Our apartments are supplied with the necessities to get you by until we can get to the store on our own. Except – when Joyce arrived they forgot to supply her with the standard “t.p.” – so we had to wait in the lobby for someone to go get her a roll.

  9. More photos

    June 9, 2005 by Leanne

Mike and I at dinner on Wednesday night.
This was one of the most beautiful nights of weather we’ve had!

Mike and Sara – in a special moment.

Derek and Joyce arrived from WDW on Wednesday.

Sara was there to greet them!

These next shots are just some of the beautiful scenery we see here.

I’m particularly proud of these sunset shots taken from the shuttle bus.

And finally, this is a shot of our apartment complex.

My building is the one on the far right.

  10. Miscellaneous Photos

    June 8, 2005 by Leanne

Here are some more photos of Hong Kong:

This is a common sight all over the country – massive apartment complexes.

This is less common – the lower economy.

A shot taken from the bus on the way to work.

This is the shipyards with all the goods in containers ready to be distributed.

    This is my apartment kitchen.

…and my apartment den (Which I never use.)

And my living room – where I am sitting now working on the computer.
Please keep the emails coming. It’s so good to hear from home and friends. PLEASE!!
